Full Lateral Polymer Squeeze

(Midland Basin)

Well information:

  • Midland Basin, Texas
  • Total Perforations: 1440
  • Total Clusters: 360
  • Max Pressure: 8000 psi
  • Volume to Top Perf: ~180 bbls
  • Volume to Bottom Perf: ~475 bbls

Operational Goal

  • The Operator aimed to squeeze off the entire lateral so that the well can be refraced. A polymer squeeze was chosen to isolate the lateral rather than expandable or cemented liners due to significant cost savings, operational simplicity, and the desire to maintain full wellbore internal diameter.
  • A frac blender was used to introduce diverter into the fluid via the tub via manually cutting bags and also via the sand screws.
  • One frac pump was rigged up to handle diverter. The rest of the spread was rigged into pump only clean fluid for displacement.
  • Flowglobes+ were introduced manually into the iron downstream of the missile because they cannot pass through pumps due to their size.
  • The treatment fluid for the job was 20# gel.

Treatment Plot:

Below is the full treatment. Rate is plotted with the orange line on the right axis, ranging from 0-25 bpm. Pressure is plotted with the blue line on the left axis, ranging from 0-8000 psi.

This treatment can be split into two parts for analysis. Part 1 is the portion of the job in which large diverter drops were being made and pressure had not yet increased significantly. Part 2 is the portion of the job when the polymer squeeze began to take effect, and the operators were forced to cut rate due to pressure limitations.

In the next sections, we will analyze each of these portions independently. Part 1 represented by the blue box, and Part 2 represented by the green box
